The Mathematical Engineering programme is intended for those secondary school graduates who hesitate between studying mathematics at a university and studying engineering subjects at a technical university. For this reason, this programme extends across field boundaries. It is an inter-disciplinary programme providing the students with basic education in mathematics as well as in engineering fields. In mathematics teaching, considerable stress is placed on applications.
Mathematical Engineering is among the special independent programmes offered at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Brno University of Technology, and is regarded as such from the very first year of study. In mathematics, those parts that provide the most frequent applications in engineering receive special attention. After the first-year courses where the necessary basics of mathematical analysis, algebra, and computer graphics and geometry are taught, in the next years, the students will acquaint themselves with the most important fields of applied mathematics such as differential equations, functional analysis, graph theory, probability and mathematical statistics, discrete mathematics, numerical methods, optimization, etc. State-of-the-art aids are used in teaching with frequent use of computers. Courses in computer science include basics of programming, programming techniques and modern programming methods and a very progressive field of computer graphics. As an engineering degree requires physics as a necessary background, a two-semester course in physics is included. This is then followed by courses in statics, thermomechanics, hydromechanics, theoretical mechanics, electrotechnics and electronics, and automation. Engineering courses include above all basics of design, materials engineering, elasticity and strength, technology, parts and mechanisms of machines. Each semester, a large number of optional courses are available to the students.
Goals of the Branch
The graduates will acquire knowledge of the basic mathematical methods used in engineering applications. They will study some particular cases of such applications in technical courses while in informatics they will be taught how to use computers efficiently to solve engineering problems. Thus the Bachelor's degree graduates will be theoretically well equipped to find jobs in engineering practice as leaders of production teams of various specifications.
This programme graduates receive Bachelor's degree engineering education with more profound knowledge of mathematics and as such will find jobs in most diverse industrial and other fields. However, the general expectation is that most of them will continue their study in a similar Master's degree programme.
Graduates from the Bachelor's degree Mathematical Engineering programme may continue their study in an identical two-year follow-up programme to receive a Master's degree of "ing.". Bachelor's degree programme graduates are admitted to this Master's degree study without having to pass admission exams.

Students may be sent to stay at universities abroad mostly during their Master's degree study of the Mathematical Engineering programme. The following universities abroad are among those with which the FME Institute of Mathematics, which guarantees such stays, has established co-operation Texas University in Austin (USA), Molde University College (Norway), University of Malta, L'Aquila University (Italy), Universytet Marii Curie-Sklodowskiej w Lubline, Chalmers University of Technology (Sweden), Technische Universität Hamburg, Universität Potsdam, Technische Universität Wien, Université Pierre et Marie Curie, Paris.
