» Doctoral study programme

Doctoral study programme enables to continue the study of applied mathematics to those students who reached the master degree of Mathematical engineering study at Faculty of Mechanical engineering of Brno University of Technology as well to students who finished the master degree study of technical subjects or sciences with a significant amount of mathematics. Creative research conducted in a field of applied mathematics and co-operation with experts in other engineering and scientific fields are major focuses of the study the students should master. They are encouraged in a maximum degree to engage in research projects of the Institute of Mathematics at BUT Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. Wide utilization of computers and modern programming techniques is platitude. At present, the study is directed at the following special fields: 

  1. Mathematical modelling of engineering problems using continuous models leading to solutions of differential equations, (ordinary, partial, and stochastic ones). These are above all problems in continuum mechanics such as modelling composite materials and solving problems in the theory of flow and others. Apart from problem analyses conducted, also numerical solutions to problems are investigated including the theory and development of numerical methods focussing on finite-element methods.
  2. Fuzzy models and stochastic models of engineering systems and processes with applications in technology, theory of reliability, study of properties of metal materials and in the field of management. Optimisation methods and their engineering and economic applications.
  3. Numerical methods of image analysis and their applications in engineering, biology, medicine, physics, and space research. Computer graphics and applied geometry and their use in engineering fields. Digital topology and its use in image processing and object recognition.
  4. Differential geometry of curves, surfaces, and their applications. Applications of the calculus of variations in engineering fields.

In collaboration with supervisors, students choose courses according to the specialisation of their study. They usually pass through all the courses during the first year of the study so that they could concentrate on the thesis in the second and third year.

  

Entry Requirements

Students with a Master's degree from the Mathematical Engineering programme offered at the BUT Faculty of Mechanical Engineering or from a mathematics-oriented Master's degree programme at another university may choose this Doctor's degree programme to continue their study of engineering and physical applications of mathematics. They have to pass an admission exam.


 

Career Prospects

The Mathematical Engineering Doctor's degree programme graduates will find jobs mostly in applied research and as members of engineering research teams. They are also well equipped for management and analytic positions in companies requiring mathematical modelling skills, knowledge of the probability theory, statistics, and optimisation. Thanks to access to state-of-the-art equipment during their study, they have a considerable chance of being employed in the field of scientific and engineering software development. The basic feature of each graduate should be capability of teamwork on an interdisciplinary basis.
