» Master degree programme

As a Master's degree programme, Mathematical Engineering is part of a two-year Applied Sciences in Engineering Master's degree follow-up programme. As such, this programme is specialised with its graduates receiving a Master's degree of “ing.” It is an inter-disciplinary programme providing the students with advanced education in mathematics as well as in engineering fields, in which mathematics plays an important role. By embarking on the Mathematical Engineering Master's degree programme, students will receive a substantially extended and more profound knowledge as compared with the Bachelor's degree programme.
The students will acquaint themselves with further fields of mathematics closely related to engineering applications such as functions of complex variable, differential geometry and tensor calculus, theory of graphs, stochastic processes, mathematical methods in the theory of flow, basics of optimal management, fuzzy sets and applications, variational calculus, etc.
Next, courses are offered in applied subjects such as image analysis, multi-valued logic applications, mathematical methods in the theory of flow, and financial mathematics.
Non-mathematical courses include quality management and metrology, theory of dynamical systems and mechatronics, database systems, artificial intelligence, operation systems or computer networks (students choose one of the two), and object oriented programming in C++ or programming for Windows (student choose one of the two).
Further courses are offered as optional.
During the first semester of the Master's degree programme, students will choose, from among a set of themes, one of their degree project in order to be able to begin work on the project in the subsequent semester. Intensive work on the project is then planned for the entire last year of the study. Work on a degree project involves an independent approach to an engineering problem of a mathematical nature or to a general problem in applied mathematics.

  

Goals of the Branch

The graduates will acquire more profound knowledge of mathematics and informatics that can be used to deal with sophisticated problems in engineering practice. Thus, in addition to the knowledge of the essential engineering fields acquired with the Bachelor's degree, the graduates will obtain the theoretical background needed for them to attain leading positions in research teams of various engineering specializations.


 

Entry Requirements

To be admitted to study, candidates have to have a Bachelor's degree which they have received by studying the Mathematical Engineering Bachelor's degree programme or some other mathematics-oriented programme (at a university or a technical university). Candidates that fulfil this condition are eligible for admission without having to pass an exam. Graduates from the Mathematical Engineering Bachelor's degree programme are admitted to study without any additional conditions. Graduates from a mathematics-oriented Bachelor's degree programme at another university may have to sign up for additional courses required for the Master's degree programme.


 

Career Prospects

This programme graduates receive engineering education and, in addition to the usual engineering skills, are equipped with more profound knowledge of mathematics. This will help them tackle most diverse engineering problems efficiently using computer equipment. Therefore, they will mostly be offered membership of research and development teams in diverse engineering professions.


 

Advanced Courses

The best graduates are expected to continue their study in a Doctor's degree programme at our Faculty.


 

Study Stays Abroad, International Cooperation

The best students of the Mathematical Engineering Master's degree programme may spend part of their studies at a university abroad. The following universities abroad are among those with which the FME Institute of Mathematics, which guarantees such stays, has established co-operation: Texas University in Austin (USA), Molde University College (Norway), University of Malta, L'Aquila University (Italy), Universytet Marii Curie-Sklodowskiej w Lubline, Chalmers University of Technology (Sweden), Technische Universität Hamburg, Universität Potsdam, Technische Universität Wien, Université Pierre et Marie Curie, Paris.
